1Switch it onPress the button. Fit two AAA batteries first if it's a fresh unit.
2Test on a known live sourceTouch it to a socket you know is energised and confirm it alarms. This proves the pen and the batteries are working before you trust a "no voltage" reading.
3Bring the tip to the pointHold the flat probe close to the socket, terminal or cable you want to check.
4Read the alarmFast red flashing with loud beeping means live. Re-test on the known source afterwards to confirm the pen still works.

⚠️ Please Read Before You Use It β€’ Always test on a known live source before and after checking a circuit. A flat battery or a damaged pen can give a silent "no voltage" reading on a wire that is very much live. β€’ A non-contact tester can miss voltage. Shielded or armoured cable, metal conduit, thick insulation, recessed conductors and the way you hold the pen can all suppress the signal. Treat "no alarm" as a hint, not proof. β€’ Never use it as your only proof that a circuit is dead before working on it. Switch off at the MCB, lock it off, and verify with a contact tester or multimeter. β€’ Mains work carries a real risk of electrocution. If you're not confident, call a licensed electrician.

Do I need to touch the wire?+
No. It senses the electric field around an AC conductor, so you can hold the tip near a socket, terminal or insulated cable without making contact.
Will it detect DC, like a car battery?+
No. It's an AC-only tester rated 90–1000V at 50/60Hz. It will not respond to DC circuits such as batteries, solar panels or vehicle wiring.
It didn't beep β€” is the wire definitely safe?+
Not necessarily, and this matters. Non-contact testers can miss live voltage behind shielding, metal conduit or thick insulation, and a weak battery can silence them entirely. Always confirm the pen alarms on a known live source first, and never rely on it alone to declare a circuit dead.
What batteries does it take?+
Two AAA (No. 7) batteries. Keep a spare pair around β€” a fading battery reduces sensitivity before it fully stops working.
Can a beginner use it?+
Yes, for simple checks like finding which socket is live or which breaker kills a circuit. It is not a substitute for training β€” any actual wiring work on mains should be done by, or under, a licensed electrician.
